Tonight I made this dessert that I posted back in February. When buying the ingredients, the Nabisco Low-Fat Vanilla Wafers were $3.99 and the store brand regular wafers were $1.99. I went with the store brand.
I'm taking this dessert to my in-laws tomorrow for a bon voyage meal. Hubby's mom and dad are getting ready to take off for Yuma AZ for three months. They are leaving really early this year. So we're having a last meal with them until after the first of the year sometime. Not sure when they are coming back. We won't even see them for Thanksgiving or Christmas.
Do you have a favorite dessert recipe that you like to make? If so, make a blog post of it and paste the link in the comment section. Would love to get more ideas of yummy (and healthy?) desserts.

Relaxing weekend ***UPDATED WITH PHOTOS
Friday night my SIL and I left after work to head up to the mountains for a bit of R&R. We met our hubbies and in-laws who went up on Thursday. It was gorgeous up there!
We camped out at the O'Haver Lake camp ground located near Salida, CO.

We rode the ATVs.

Sat around the camp fire.

And some not-so-wildlife.

Making our kissy faces.
Father in Law above. Mother in Law below.
Went fishing. Got some sun. Ate some s'mores.
Saw some wildlife.
It was so nice to get away and relax.
The dogs enjoyed it too. My MIL brought her little yorkie. She is quite the Alpha female. She tried to boss around Cinnamon and Sugar. Cinnamon is too passive and let her get away with whatever. Sugar on the other hand gave her crap. It's too bad my MIL was around when the fighting was going on, otherwise I would have smacked that little yorkie right on the nose. I've done it before, and she settles right down then. Oh well.
Today I'm back at work, fighting the yawns. I think I need to go across the street and get me a venti iced black coffee, shaken not stirred, from the Bucks (short for st.ar.buck.s).
Speaking of (.). No, not AF or my monthly period. I'm talking about putting periods in between the letters of certain words so your blog isn't brought up in a search for that word. I think I may have to start doing this more often. Remember my Sweet 16 post? Yeah, the store I mentioned in that post must do a search of the net for stories about their clothes. Well, they posted the link to my blog post on their fa.ce.bo.ok page. Yeah, it was nice to get the props for reaching a size 16W, but on the other hand, my blog isn't common knowledge to 98% of my family or friends. A few know about it, but most don't. And my co-workers (with the exception of two) don't know about my WLS. So now, if any of them happen to be a fan of that store on FB, they could very well see my post, therefore outing me. So just a little lesson that if you don't want to be discovered, you may need to use those little dots in the names of common names such as FB, or SB, or DB (wow, all those have Bs in them and they are not the same word). Oh, I think you can go into your blog settings and say you don't want to be included in any internet searches, so if this becomes a problem for you, you could do this too. Or so could I.

LapBand Seminar and milestone
Last evening, I attended the seminar on the LapBand system by a local surgeon. He presented a video of testimonials of patients who had undergone the procedure, he showed a bit of what the surgery actually looks like inside the abdomen, and then most impressive before and after pictures. One gal lost 100% of her excess weight, going from 275 pounds down to 123 pounds. Wow!
The average results of excess weight lost using the LapBand system is between 58% - 60%, give or take a few points. So if a person has 100 pounds to lose, then on average, they'll lose around 60 pounds. And sustain it. That is one thing with this system that you normally don't have when you try to lose the weight on your own - sustainability.
I had so many questions-slash-fears about the restrictions going into this seminars. I have always been ~ since I was a kid and my folks forced me to eat that damned canned spinach and I would take the tiniest bites and wash it down with iced tea ~ a drinker during meals. I can drink two, sometimes three, glasses of iced tea when I eat, or a large diet pepsi. With this system, you can't do that, because the liquid would just was the food right through the small opening, which negates the system's intent of making you feel full, therefore eating less. So I will have to modify this behavior.
I was also concerned about being able to drink soda. I will have to give this up. Because soda is carbonated, it could cause my stomach pouch to expand, causing pain and problems. So I will be waiving farewell to my diet pepsi and the occasional root beer or grape soda. As well as the sparkling cider we have each New Year's Eve.
Loose skin was a concern by several of us who attended. The surgeon said that while some people do go and have this removed once they've lost all their excess weight, many others don't, they just deal with it. And, since you lose the weight slower with the LapBand system than you do with traditional gastric bypass surgery, your body has a longer time to let the skin shrink back to close to its normal size. Now, for me, this may not be the case since I have always suffered from stretch marks. So if I do get down near my goal weight, I may very well be going to see a plastic surgeon to remove excess skin around my lower abdomen, as well as getting a breast lift ('cause let's face it, if these things shrink, they are going to be like tube socks with tennis balls in them hanging low and swinging). But, we'll definitely wait on the plastic surgery until we try IVF again using donor eggs or donor embryos. No sense getting a nice flat tummy if it's going to be stretched out by pregnancy (like the way I'm being positive here??).
The thing I really like about this surgeon is that he just doesn't cut you up then forget about you. He provides one year of free appointments following the surgery, including adjustments to the band, as well as just "how are you doing" appointments. He doesn't want his patients to feel neglected, plus he thinks that when you stay in touch with the surgeon, you have better long term results than if you're left on your own.
He has also provided us with financing options. I am debating whether I want to do that, which would be like buying a small car, or take from my IRA. That's something I've really got to think about because one way or the other, I'm doing this.
Hubby and I were talking about everything we heard and saw after the seminar. He was asking if I could really change my lifestyle, give up eating whatever I want, give up my diet pepsis, pay a small chunk of change in order to lose weight. I told him that I do not want to get new knees within the next few years. That I want to be able to have a baby. That I want to be able to live life with energy and a new outlook. So yes, I am willing to make the needed sacrifices and lifestyle changes required to do this. My quality of life now is around a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10. To me, that is way too low. I have a good life, don't get me wrong, but there are just so many things that I can't do that others of normal weight can do that I want to do. I want to be able to take walks with my dogs that aren't going to hurt my back and knees. I want to go to an amusement park and ride roller coasters and such that I can't fit into now. I want to be able to take the stairs when I go to clients' offices, rather than take the elevator because I get winded so easily and start sweating at the drop of a hat. I want to be able to buy clothes that I don't have to order online from the fat department, rather than go into the mall and pick up something cute there. I don't want to develop diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, and a host of other diseases that are just waiting for me around the corner if my weight stays at the level it is now.
In addition to determining the financing piece of it, I also need to determine the timing of it. We are coming into a very busy season at work as well as some mandatory training that won't allow me to take off any time during October and the first half of November. So I'm thinking that if I go ahead and do this, I may either do it in December or January. That should give me time to do the consult with the nutritionist and psychologist that the surgeon requires. And since I won't be going through my insurance (since they don't cover it), I don't have to worry about any hoops to jump through.
I originally didn't want to tell any of our family about doing this, and I am still reluctant. However, Hubby went and told his mom about it, because he was trying to get her to go to the seminar with me instead of him going. So now his mom and dad know, which I really didn't want them to know, because she is so freaking judgemental. Plus it isn't for him to tell anyone about a medical procedure that I am going to undertake. That's my decision to make so I am a bit upset about that, which I told him, so this won't come as a surprise to him when he reads this. The reason I don't want to tell anyone, at this point, is that if I either decide not to do it, or if after I actually have the consult, the surgeon decides that it isn't in my best interest to do it (for whatever reason that may be), then I don't want to have to go back and tell people that it isn't happening. Also I just wanted a bit of privacy because our experience with the IF treatment was so out in the open with the family.
I've written a small book here! Thanks for reading this far through. I'm sure I'll have more to say about it as time goes by.
P.S. Happy 300th post to me!

The petitioners were out at the state fair gathering signatures for the parenthood amendment. My MIL signed it! Ugh. Thanks.

Weekend review
We had a nice three day weekend. Friday, we went up to Colorado Springs to take my car for its maintenance to the Sa.turn dealership since the one here in town closed. We then headed up the hill to Cripple Creek to try our hands at the higher stakes and new games, Roulette and Craps. I still played the penny slots, but Hubby played the Roulette and three card poker. I ended up spending only about $90 for the day, which isn't too bad.
Saturday, we went over to Hubby's aunt and uncle's house for lunch. Then we came back to our house where we catered for my family. Two nice meals in one day. We shot off fireworks without having to worry about anything catching on fire since it had rained most of the day.
Sunday we went to the reservoir to celebrate Hubby's niece's 17th birthday. We were only there an hour before the heavy rainstorm drove everyone away. Which was good, because I couldn't handle watching the two-week old infant being passed around to everyone. One lady (the grandma I think) asked me if I wanted to see the baby. I tried to say no, something about it sleeping, but she still got the kid up to show off. Thank God she didn't ask if I wanted to hold him.
We saw some white tail deer last evening when we headed out to see Hubby's parents. Normally, mule deer hang out in this area of the state, so it was a treat to see the white tails. Three bucks and one doe.
I got good news today. I'm getting most of what I paid to my RE back because my insurance ended up covering more than I thought it would. My credit card will appreciate that.

I really hope this link works so you can see how well my Hubby (with the goatee), BIL (scruffy looking) and FIL (clean shaved) can dance a jig.
I can't stop laughing!

What good?
Today we went to a local buffet to celebrate Hubby's grandma's 88th birthday. When we first go there, there were some kids, but mostly teenagers. Then as more and more people arrived, so did the little children, and the bumps. I was okay until after we ate, when the visiting and present opening began.
We started talking about how many generations there were in Hubby's family; who has having what babies; how many kids everyone has. Hubby's niece came back to sit down holding a four-month old. At first, I was fine. I even helped put his shoe back on that had fallen off. I chucked his sweet little cheeks.
And then I heard it. MIL asking the baby's father, "I'll give you a thousand dollars and an unlimited supply of tacos for him." (Side note, Hubby's family owns and operates Mexican food restaurants here in town.) This isn't the first time, within my presense or earshot, MIL has asked someone to either have their kid or for that person to hurry up and have a baby so she will have a baby to dote on.
The first time I heard her say that to Hubby's SIL's sister, I just made a joking remark, "Yeah, 'cause she's not getting any from us anytime soon." This time, I just tried to catch his eye, indicating I wanted to leave. Finally, I was able to, we said our goodbyes to his grandma and others, and left. As soon as I got in the car I burst into tears.
"It's not fair. We can't have kids. Why does your mom have to say shit like that?" I could barely get the words out. I know she thinks she's being compassionate, but unfortunately she has fallen short way too often in the things she says. She's always going on about what God has in store for us, and that what will happen is His will. Yes, damn it, I know this but it doesn't make it any easier. Sometimes I want to say to her "STFU!"
I want to get mad. I want to rage against God, against life, against my body. But what good does it do? In the end, it doesn't change anything. It's not going to get me pregnant next month. It's not going to stop people from making inappropriate comments. It's not going to stop me from feeling or hurting.
After lunch Hubby and I went grocery shopping. I put away all the groceries, then took the frozen chicken down to the garage to put in the deep freeze. Just briefly, I thought about getting into the car, starting the engine, closing my eyes, and letting everything go.
I don't want to be like that. I want to be one of those happy people who I had lunch with today. The one who worries about making sure their kids are bundled up against the cold. The one who has to worry about day care versus staying at home.
I want but what good does it do?

Disturbing dream
Throughout our TTC, I think I have remained mostly positive, and not too jealous of people who are successful, or maybe even those who haven't struggled and had their kids without any medical assistance.
However, last night, I had a dream where all my feelings of inadequacy and insecurity came through.
I dreamt that my SIL had a baby. We were over at their house, and she was about two months old. Very cute, white baby (my SIL & BIL are Hispanic). They kept having me hold her and feed her. The first bottle I gave her was soda! Can you believe that? Freakin' soda! Then I asked if they had actual milk, and they gave me a bottle of formula to feed her. She took to it like there was no tomorrow.
What's so bad about the dream is that my SIL had a hysterectomy about 13 years ago, not too long after she had her second child. So she can't have any more kids. But she did in my dream.
I was so hurt. I finally had to give the little girl to someone else so I could go and cry in private.
I wonder why I had that dream? Am I not letting myself feel the emotions that normally accompany infertility treatments? Am I just too wound up, and my dreams are the only way to release myself? I never took psychology, so I am not very good at putting all the little twists and turns on these kinds of things.
I'm just very glad that I won't be having to face this in real life (that is, my SIL having another baby). I think I would truly blow up if I did.

Lingering effects of Octomom
My MIL asked me the other night if the medicines I'm taking will cause me to have eight babies, like that "woman in California?" Um, no.
I went on to explain to her what happened with Octolina (heh! a new name for the octomom Angelina wanna-be), how her doctor was very unethical, didn't practice wise medicine, etc. Yeah, there will not be eight babies residing in this uterus. Not all at once nor scattered over time.
Speaking of MIL, please say a prayer, think good thoughts, etc., for her. They cut short their annual vacation to Yuma, AZ due to her finding a lump in her underarm. It's her lymph node. She's scheduled for surgery March 6. I think she is very scared as her mom died of breast cancer, so I'm sure that's in the back of her mind.

Marriage is a wonderful thing
My Hubby's grandma, who is 87 and a widow, has recently begun dating the father of the pastor of the new church. He too is a widower and is in his mid- to late 70s. They are so cute together. They spend time with each other, going to lunch, or for a ride. They even went on a date last Saturday to a funeral of someone they both knew!
I started teasing Grandma that her and Jim need to get married. Oh my. You should have seen the hackles raise on one of her daughters, who was more concerned about Grandma losing her soci.al se.curity check than she was of her happiness. Even tonight when we went over to visit Hubby's aunt and uncle and grandma, the uncle (Grandma's SIL) was concerned about her benefits. I don't think they were too impressed that I came up with a solution to the problem.
They can get married in the church without obtaining a marriage license! Many seniors are doing that these days, especially since the woman would lose her benefits from her late husband. They would be married in the eyes of God, but not the state. I think it would be great for a couple their age to have a second chance at love. I even told Grandma that I would host her bachelorette party and get her "protection" so they wouldn't have to worry about having more kids. She just laughed.
A decision would have to be made as to who would marry them. Her son, who was the pastor of our old church, or Jim's son, who is the pastor of the new church. Of course, they can both preside over the service, and one of her other sons can walk her down the aisle. That would just be too sweet.
What do you think? Get married at their age or just not give love a chance?

Talking about prophets
Hubby and I have been talking the last few days. Sometimes for long periods of time, other times for just a few minutes. But each of the talks brings up information that we need to discuss, or things to consider, or just reaffirmation of our love for each other.
His dad (pastor of our old church) told him yesterday about a prophet that will be in town today through Friday at a local church. He said we might want to consider going and listening to him. Hubby told me about this last night after we got back from dinner with his folks. I asked him if he thought I should take whatever this prophet says as the gospel truth and follow what he says. We got into a long debate over it, and continued it today at lunch.
Our old church brought in an evangelist a couple of times. I was there the first time he came, and couldn't wait to leave. He was loud, obnoxious, and loud. I can't stand to be screamed at! Made me wish I had a hearing aid that I could turn down. But apparently, he gave messages to quite a few people at church, several of whom actually followed what he said.
Our old church, and the one that took it over, both were real big into being slain in the spirit. I do think that people can be slain in the spirit, but I also think that there are a LOT of fakes falling down at the altar, all for show, so that they can be in the "in" crowd. The new church we are going to is quiet and while they welcome people to the alter to pray, there is no falling over. (Just a bit of background, I grew up as a Baptist, so this Pentecostal stuff is alien to me, although I've been going to my hubby's church for about five years.)
Anyway, back to the prophet, apparently this gentleman will be in town and my FIL thinks we should attend, to help give us direction as to where we should head from here. My first instinct is to run, run far, far away. But I have to remember that I am not the only one in this quest to have a child. My husband does put some stock into these people. He told me if I were to go, I would have to go in with an open mind. I have to admit, that is going to be hard for me to do, as you can tell, I'm just a tad bit skeptical.
I will go and listen to him. I will even go up with Hubby to the altar and see if the prophet says anything to us. However, if he says something along the lines of our quest for children being over, I will not allow that to stop me from continuing forth with my journey. I can't give up control over something that I still feel I have some control over. I may not be able to control whether my ovaries will produce eggs, but I can still pursue other options to become a Mom. And that, my friends, is my ultimate goal.

Easter Bunny Don't Live Here No More
Yeah, yeah, it's not proper grammar, shoot me. Or better yet, why don't you lend me some of your eggs. Well, not actually lend them, as I won't give them back. Just give 'em to me.
My Easter basket is empty. My egg carton has run out of eggs. I have bacon, eggs needed.
While I haven't yet got the phone call from Dr. Slick or even Battle Axe yet today, I'm assuming that I won't, unless some miracle occurs. But you see, my name isn't Mary, and I won't be carrying a baby that was conceived through immaculate reception (as my Hubby likes to say). If I do ever carry a baby, I'll be using someone else's little eggies, as mine are no where to be found.
Those follicles shown on the little monitor today? Most likely empty. That thin line you saw? My monophasic (or whatever B.S. that spewed from his mouth) uterus that didn't respond either to the meds. I didn't really think that still being on my period was such a bad thing. Well it is, if you're injecting yourself with maximum doses of drugs that should have shut it off right away. I should have had multiple follicles popping out of them there ovaries. I should have. I should have two freaking ovaries that are producing eggs. Good grief, I'm only 37. I'm not ancient. Hell, I'm not even old. But tell that to my good-for-nothing ovaries that are in my abdomen.
I may seem bitter, and I can't lie, I am. But I'm not crying. No, I'll save that for later, although when I was at my acupuncturist's office on Thursday and told him how Dr. Slick didn't like my asking questions, he was very comforting, and actually made me cry a bit. No, I'll save my tears for when the numbness wears off.
Dr. Slick said to take some time, we can discuss options. Hubby says he needs a while to think things over, pray on what we should do. I'll let him. While he's doing that, I'll start researching. Find out exactly what donor eggs will entail, including costs, facilitation, what if any my insurance will pick up, finances, etc. I've got work to do while Hubby thinks things over and prays about it.
We invited his folks to breakfast this morning when we got back into town. After a while, I told them that if we do have kids, they won't be biologically mine. After giving a bit of support, my MIL says that maybe we should just stop for a while, as God tends to give prophets to those women who are barren. Who the hell does she think I am that I am going to get a prophet? I'm not Mary. I'm not Ruth, or Sara, or any of those other ladies who are selfless. I'm Tori. I'm the girl who in college was promiscuous and am now paying for it. I forgot to mention that during the u/s that Dr. Slick tells us for the very first time that my left ovary (you know, the one that likes to hide during all the ultrasounds and is painful to look at??) is connected to the back of my ovary with scar tissue. Gee, thanks for just now telling us this, doc.
So I'm going to have a prophet, huh? Only prophet I'll have is if I can sell my boobs to some chick who has none. That's the profit I'll get.
Once I get over my bitterness and can clear my head a bit, I'll start thinking. I'll start making my plans. I'll start determining if I can use my insurance to my advantage (Nancy, sorry if I gave you sh*t for saying you shouldn't fill your left over prescriptions so you can provide them to someone who doesn't have insurance, as I'm thinking of using it for a donor, if need be). I'll figure this thing out. If there is one thing I am good at, it's figuring things out.
I'll get it done. One way or the other, I'll get it done. It may take a while, but you'll see. I'll get it done.

When did you call your MIL Mom?
I've been married almost three years to Hubby. In all this time, I've always called his folks by their first names. I've always felt that it would be disrespectful to my mom if I called his mom "Mom." (My dad isn't in the picture so calling his dad wouldn't be too weird, but I won't call him Dad if I don't call her Mom.)
For Mother's Day, I signed what I thought was my mom's card with "Mom, thanks for all you've done for me over the years. Love, Tori." When I realized it was his mom's card I signed, I was like, oh well.
Today, I got my birthday card from FIL & MIL. It said "Love, Mom & Dad" and then over to the side "Sorry, Love (FIL's name) & (MIL's name)." So now I'm starting to feel a bit guilty for not calling them Mom and Dad.
I do get along well with them. I love them like second parents, in case anyone wonders.
When did all of you start calling your IL's by Mom & Dad? Or do you still call them by their first names?
